Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns Kenyans against fraud; Visa applications and fake jobs

On Tuesday, February 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the government has issued a warning to Kenyans about the increasing number of fraud visa applications and phony jobs, warning them not to fall for these scams.

“The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs continues to receive complaints from citizens who have been defrauded while applying for travel visas to various countries,” a statement from the Ministry read.

Kenyans wishing to go overseas for business or pleasure were advised by the foreign office to follow the right procedures to prevent falling victim to fraud.

“It is important that persons seeking to travel to different destinations apply for the correct visas as provided on the official websites of the respective countries,” the ministry stated.

The ministry emphasized the importance of individual responsibility when traveling overseas and urged Kenyans looking for work abroad to conduct “due diligence” before making travel arrangements.

“Visa application is a personal responsibility that does not require the approval of agents or organisations. The Ministry advises persons seeking employment in various destinations on the need for due diligence before embarking on any travel arrangements,” said another statement. 

What will happen if your visa expires while in a foreign country?

The Ministry cautioned of the severe repercussions that would result from Kenyans staying in a foreign nation past the expiration of their visas.

“The Ministry cautions that it is an offence under immigration law to overstay the duration of a visa. If arrested, one can be liable to imprisonment or fine as may be determined by the courts of the various jurisdictions. One can also be deported for violation of immigration law,” it noted.

The government also instructed Kenya’s missions overseas to step up and offer the necessary assistance to Kenyans looking to travel overseas in search of employment.

“The Ministry advises that all the 67 Kenya Missions abroad remain available to assist in conducting the necessary due diligence on any job opportunities,” it stated.
