Early Life and Education

Raised in Uganda and later Kenya, Namwamba’s academic journey led him to the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree.

His passion for international law took him to American University Washington College of Law, where he obtained a Master of Laws degree.

Legal Career

Before entering the political arena, Ababu Namwamba had already established himself as a public interest attorney specializing in international human rights and constitutional law. He served as the Chief Counsel at The Chambers of Justice, a public interest trust he founded in 2002.

Running alongside his law firm, Ababu Namwamba Attorneys-at-Law, he demonstrated a commitment to accountability and justice.

Political Ascent

Namwamba’s entry into Kenyan politics occurred in the 2007 parliamentary election, where he successfully secured a seat in the National Assembly representing Budalang’i Constituency as a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

His capabilities and dedication led to his appointment as Parliamentary Secretary of the ODM from 2008 to 2013.

In 2016, Namwamba left ODM, where he had served as the secretary-general. Citing concerns about the party’s leadership, he joined the newly relaunched Labour Party of Kenya.

Since September 2016, Namwamba has held the position of the leader of the Labour Party.

Despite his leadership transition, Namwamba faced electoral challenges in the 2017 elections, losing his Budalang’i seat.
