Sad news as billionaire Imam Aga Khan dies at the age of 88

A bad morning to Kenyans as Aga Khan dies! According to the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), His Majesty, The 49th Shia Ismaili Muslim hereditary Imam, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, died quietly in his sleep on Wednesday night at the age of 88.

Billionaire Aga Khan dies at 88

The philanthropist was born on December 13, 1936, in Geneva to Aly Khan and Joan Yarde-Buller, who was born in Britain. He spent his early years in Nairobi city. His writings have influenced economic empowerment, healthcare, and education.

‘’His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), passed away peacefully in Lisbon on 4 February 2025, aged 88, surrounded by his family,” AKDN Network said.

“Prince Karim Aga Khan was the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network.”

AKDN also disclosed that his chosen successor would be announced when the time was right.

Leaders and staff of the Aga Khan Development Network are on sending their condolences to the family of His Highness and to the Ismaili community worldwide.

‘’As we honour the legacy of our founder, Prince Karim Aga Khan, we continue to work with our partners to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities across the world, as he wished, irrespective of their religious affiliations or origins,” said the Network.

Aga Khan businesses in Kenya

Prince Karim Al-Hussaini has a number of businesses in Kenya, including the Aga Khan University, hospitals, schools, and media outlets (he established Nation Media Group, the parent company of NTV and Daily Nation).

He was the Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network and a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad.

President Ruto sends his condolonces

The late Imam was praised by President William Ruto as an exceptional leader who went above and beyond to assist the less privileged.

“We are saddened by the passing of The Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims,” president Ruto said.

“He was an extraordinary leader who went beyond what seemed impossible to help the vulnerable — through his charities in hospitals and schools.”

The former UN Secretary-General António Guterres also sent his condolences to the family.

”I am deeply saddened by the news that His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, has passed away. He was a symbol of peace, tolerance and compassion in our troubled world,” said Guterres.  

”I express my deepest condolences to His Highness’s family and the Ismaili community,” he added.
