Please step in and stop HOIs’ intimidation; JSS teachers request TSC

JSS teachers have now requested the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to step in and stop intimidation by their school heads. The teachers have claimed that they are subjected to widespread systematic discrimination, threats, and coercion from Heads of Institutions (HOI), and they are now urging the Commission to undertake comprehensive, unbiased investigations into the cases that have been reported.

KUPPET’s reaction on JSS teachers

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), Makueni branch, has weighed in on the issue and cautioned primary school headteachers who also serve as acting junior secondary school principals against intimidating the JSS teachers.

The majority of the headteachers have not had a good working relationship with the Junior Secondary School teachers since they started working there in 2023.

Dr Nancy Macharia speaks

A total of 39,550 JSS teachers were working on internship terms, as confirmed by TSC in January. Of these, 21,550 were hired in February 2023, and 18,000 were hired in September 2023. In January, TSC recruited 20,000 more Junior Secondary School teachers for a one-year internship.

Dr. Nancy Macharia, the CEO of the TSC, requested in November of last year that primary school head teachers approach the Junior Secondary School teachers with respect.

Macharia, who was speaking at the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) conference in Mombasa, urged the head teachers to treat all teachers with respect as this will give them a good working environment.

Macharia also requested that the head teachers assist the teachers in implementing CBC in the classroom.
