The Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Dr. Nancy Macharia is likely to leave office in march ahead of her retirement in July. This comes after her request for a terminal leave as from march next month.

Nancy Macharia to leave office in March
Macharia has served in the commission for two terms – Ten years, and is set to retire on June 30, 2025.
Ms. Macharia’s appointment came after a competitive hiring process that began on May 1, 2015, when 69 candidates applied for the position and four were selected for further consideration.
After Macharia proved to be the best, she succeeded Gabriel Lengoibon, who retired in June 2015.
Ms. Macharia is the ninth Commission Secretary/CEO, following Mr. Jesse Muhoro (1967–1974), Mr. James Kamunge (1974–1977), Mr. Duncan Mwangi (1978–1980), Mr. Joseph Lijembe (1980–1982), Mr. Jackson Kang’ali (1982–1998), Benjamin Sogomo (1998–2003), Mr. James Ongwae (2003–2004), and her predecessor, Mr. Gabriel K. Lengoiboni.

Inside Nancy Macharia biography
Ms. Macharia was born in Murang’a in 1963, and she is 62 years as of 2025. She is the first female ever to serve as the CEO in the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Macharia graduated with a Bachelor of Education in English/Literature from Kenyatta University and a Master of Education (Policy and Management) from Bristol University in the United Kingdom.
She began working at Kahuhia Girls’ Secondary in Murang’a in 1987 after earning her degree from Kenyatta University. She then stayed there for five years until she was promoted to deputy head teacher at Kianderi Girls’ Secondary in the same county.
Since her post as the CEO, Nancy has served teachers with diligence and integrity. In fact, teachers now have it easier, thanks to her automation of teacher services such a Tpay (Payroll), Leave, Casualty (Entry/Exit), TPAD, EDMS, Wealth Declaration, and Pension.

Teachers’ claims as the TSC CEO is set to leave office in march
During her two terms in service however, Dr. Nancy Macharia has been accused of several charges and disputes. For instance, she is accused of introducing Career Progression Guidelines (CPG), which have hindered teacher promotions and caused employment stagnation.
Primary school teachers, who had earned numerous diplomas and degrees from colleges and universities, were particularly outraged by this.
Additionally, Ms. Macharia is blamed for enacting unfavorable TSC regulations that teachers perceive as oppressive. This includes the teacher delocalization policy, which has really affected teachers.
Besides, most teachers feel that under her leadership, the process of replacing teachers was biased and meritless, with politicians participating in the hiring process.

It is also said that TPAD, which TSC uses to promote teachers, is meaningless at educational institutions. Teachers claim that TPAD is only a routine activity that doesn’t yield any significant results while costing millions of dollars.
Additionally, Macharia is charged with being the mastermind of the teacher health insurance program. This is because teachers have brought many complains for the poor medical care provided in certain AON Minet hospitals with no consideration.
