Dr Ida Odinga Library, Research, Innovation & Resource Centre

Apart from being an educator and activist, Ida Odinga also adds up as one of the most influential women in Kenya. She began ‘the Ida Odinga Library project’ six years ago with an intention to provide an ultra‐modern research, innovation and resource centre for the school and the community.

According to Ida, the library is a major investment in girls’ education and innovation infrastructure in Kenya. Besides, it reflects a push not only for traditional library services (books, reading spaces) but for research, innovation, ICT access — aligning with modern educational goals.

Where is Ida Odinga Library situated?

The library is being constructed at Ogande Girls’ High School in Homa Bay County, Kenya. Its aim is to make Ogande Girls a centre of academic excellence by providing more than just a library — including ICT hub, innovation space, research facilitation.

At one stage Ida Odinga library design included: seating for 500 students, an amphitheatre for 1,000 people.

Is Ida Odinga library complete?

Ida Odinga project is not yet complete. According to a news article, “Six years ago Ida Odinga launched a project… Hundreds of millions of shillings was raised … Why is the project incomplete?”.

There have been issues: for example, one report mentions a “runs into powerlines hitch” for the ~KSh 300 million project.

When is Ida Odinga project likely to be completed?

The project is still under construction and the exact completion date, the final costs, and the full scope may still evolve.

The centre is however intended to serve both learners and anybody who wants to learn. It honours Ida Odinga’s legacy as an educator and advocate for the girl‐child in education.
