Samia Suluhu was born in the Sultanate of Zanzibar to a teacher and his wife. Her parents laid the foundation for her future success, instilling values of education and hard work.

Suluhu is married to agriculturalist Hafidh Ameir, and together they have three sons and one daughter. Wanu Hafidh Ameir later became a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.

Education and Professional Background

After completing her secondary education in 1977, Samia Suluhu worked as an office clerk before pursuing higher education.

She graduated from the Institute of Development Management in 1986 with an advanced diploma in public administration.

Subsequently, she attended the University of Manchester from 1992 to 1994, earning a postgraduate diploma in economics.

In 2015, she obtained her MSc in Community Economic Development through a joint program between the Open University of Tanzania and Southern New Hampshire University.

Suluhu’s career began as a development officer with the regional Zanzibar government in 1988.

Over the years, she climbed the ranks, serving as a project manager at the World Food Programme and overseeing non-governmental organizations in Zanzibar during the 1990s.

Political Career

Samia Suluhu Hassan entered politics in the year 2000 as a special seat member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives with the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.

She held various ministerial positions, including Minister for Youth Employment, Women, and Children, where she notably ended the prohibition on new mothers returning to school.

In 2010, she won a seat in the National Assembly, representing the Makunduchi constituency, and was appointed as the Minister of State for Union Affairs.
