Mike Mbuvi Sonko is the former Governor, Nairobi County. He served from 2017 until December 2020 when he was impeached due to violation of the constitution. Interestingly, the flamboyant politician has now announced his intention of coming back to politics after taking a long break. Is he having any plans for the Mombasa Gubernatorial seat?

Sonko is intending to go in for the Mombasa Gubernatorial Seat come August, 9 this year. Speaking with one of the media houses, Sonko stated that he is going for the seat via Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party that cleared him on Monday, April 11.
Why Mombasa County?
Responding as to why he chose Mombasa, Sonko clarified that he is a National Leader and he can vie anywhere in the country. He also stated that he decided to settle in Mombasa because it is his hometown.
“It’s true, I am going for Mombasa county gubernatorial seat on Wiper party under Azimio, I am a national leader and Mombasa is still my hometown,” said Sonko.
Who are his competitors?
Sonko is battling with Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo, who is also seeking the Wiper ticket. The winner will compete with the former Senator Mombasa County, Hassan Omar, who is under the UDA party. Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir and billionaire Suleiman Shabal are also battling to win the ODM ticket.
However, Sonko’s biggest worry is whether the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will clear him to vie for the seat.
Speaking with one of the journalists, constitutional lawyer Bobby Mkangi said that Sonko is allowed to contest if he exhausts all forms of appeal on his case.
“A person is not disqualified under clause (2) unless all possibility of appeal or review of the relevant sentence or decision has been exhausted,” reads.
