Muthoni was married to a Kenyan business tycoon, Pius Ngugi. Unfortunately, the two parted ways in 2003 after Esther filed a lawsuit against Ngugi for a breach of promise to marry. She then demanded a monthly allowance of Ksh. 200,000 and a car to take their two children to school. However, in August 2011 Pius filed a case against her for demanding more money than they had agreed earlier.
