General Antonio Guterres congratulates President Ruto and promises Ksh 13 trillion project

During his visit to Kenya on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, the United Nations (UN) Secretary, General Antonio Guterres, congratulated President William Ruto for encouraging the use of clean energy in the country.

While talking to the Press, UN Secretary, General Antonio Guterres stated that a number of African countries are on transiting to the use of clean energy. He also commended President Ruto for joining other countries such as Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt in the transition process to 100% use of clean energy by 2030.

 “I commend President Ruto’s commitment to transition to 100 per cent clean energy by 2030.

“South Africa’s Just Transition Energy Partnership is also commendable as well as Egypt and Nigeria’s energy transition plans, and the AU’s ambitious Green Stimulus Programme,” he stated.

United Nations (UN) Secretary advocates for Ksh 13 trillion project

Antonio Guterres also stated that developed countries are going to give 100 billion US dollars a year (13 trillion) to developing countries in support of the use of clean energy.

“These massive efforts need massive support. And so, developed countries must deliver on the 100-billion US dollars a year (Ksh13 trillion) promise to developing countries and the Loss and Damage Fund agreed in Sharm el-Sheikh,” he said.

On the other hand, Guterres commended President Ruto for sending a message to warring parties in Sudan to negotiate and agree on a ceasefire. He also added that the United Nations Secretary would continue to offer humanitarian support to the Sudanese people.

“And I echo President William Ruto’s strong calls for the parties to de-escalate tensions, return to the negotiating table, and agree on a lasting ceasefire.

“In the meantime, the United Nations is ready to deliver for the Sudanese people, under the leadership of my Special Representative, Volker Perthes,” said General Antonio Guterres
