Intern teachers to get stipends as from February, TSC says

TSC has revealed that intern teachers will get stipends as from February 2025. This comes two months after they secured their jobs. Payments for these teachers, who started their jobs on January 6, experienced a minor hitch because school administrators took too long to submit their payroll documentation.

The commission is also working out payroll changes for 46,000 teachers who just made the move from internships to full-time jobs. Even though these teachers will soon receive better pay and leave benefits, the changes won’t be felt quite yet because the January payroll cycle is already over. In the next months, those modifications should start to take effect.

To prevent further delays, TSC has asked school administrators to give timely submission of required documentation first priority.

“Proper submission of casualty returns remains crucial for seamless salary processing,” the commission said.

Shortage of JSS teachers

Kenyan junior secondary schools are experiencing a severe staffing shortage. A staggering 149,350 teachers are needed by the institutions to adequately instruct students in Grades 7, 8, and 9. They are currently barely fulfilling 51.5% of that need with 76,928.

TSC has however revealed that it intends to send 6,000 more Primary Teacher Education (PTE) teachers to junior secondary schools in an effort to alleviate the burden by April. Although it’s a positive start, there is a large gap that will require more than band-aid solutions to close.

Besides, teachers teaching science courses will receive special attention to make sure they are ready for CBC training and tests.
TSC’s continuous teacher retooling program, which has been in place since 2019, includes this training. Nearly 230,000 Kenyan teachers have received training in CBC teaching techniques thus far. In order to meet the demands of contemporary teaching, more than 60,000 JSS instructors underwent targeted skill improvements just last year, from May to November.
