The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has officially released the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results. Unlike previous years, candidates will not be able to access their results through SMS. Here’s a detailed guide on how to check the 2023 KCSE results and other important information.
Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu briefed President William Ruto at State House Eldoret before announcing the results. At least 903,260 candidates sat for the papers, which took place from October 23 to November 2023.
How to check 2023 KCSE results online and access results
Candidates will not be able to access the 2023 KCSE results through SMS as in previous years.
Instead, they can check their results online through the KNEC website or the URL: www.results.knec.ac.ke.
- Visit the KNEC website or go directly to www.results.knec.ac.ke.
- Navigate to the KCSE 2023 section.
- Enter your index number and names as per your registration data.
Official result slips will be accessible through examination centres where candidates sat for their exams.
Results will be available immediately after release by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
In addition to the online platform, the council will dispatch results to sub-county education officers for distribution to exam centres.
Abolishment of SMS system
The SMS system, previously used for result checking, has been abolished.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang announced this change, stating that a more effective system would be put in place free of charge for candidates.

CS Machogu has assured candidates that the system has been thoroughly tested, and they have worked with engineers and experts to ensure the website is functioning smoothly.
“This time we have worked with engineers and experts, and we are sure that the website is working, and Kenyans will not have the inconveniences we had last time,”
he emphasized.
Grading system changes
A new grading system has been implemented for the 2023 KCSE. Only two mandatory subjects, Mathematics and one language (English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language), will be used to compute the mean grade.
Examiners will also pick the five best-performed subjects from a candidate.
The previous 8-4-4 system, with five mandatory subjects across three cluster groups, has been replaced to address perceived disadvantages for some learners.
