Shock as KNEC confirms that 133 KCPE candidates received incorrect marks in some subjects

The Kenya National Examination Council has confirmed that 133 KCPE candidates received incorrect marks in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam. CEO KNEC, David Njengere, announced this on Saturday 25th that the organization has been receiving appeals from a few impacted schools expressing dissatisfaction with their results as they were sent via the 40054 SMS code.

According to Njengere, candidates with poor grades in a few subjects—mostly English and Kiswahili—also sent inquiries to Knec. He went ahead to state that all 133 cases had been handled and that the results for the candidates who were impacted had been updated correctly.

The Knec head also disclosed that grades and marks in Kiswahili were entered into the Kenyan Sign Language section, and that results for certain candidates were not aligned.

He added that there have been instances where grades in Social Studies, Science, and Religious Education have been improperly truncated, lacking the expected plus (+) and minus (-) symbols.

He claimed that after Knec informed the SMS service provider, the text message error was fixed right away.

“The error affected only the SMS results due to configuration issues as the results in the KNEC portal are accurate,” Njengere stated.
