A woman in Mandera County has left many faces surprised after giving birth to a stone baby on 17 Tuesday, November 2020. Known by her real name as Hawa Adan, the Ethiopian lady said she has been experiencing abdominal swelling for 13 years.
Having gone through many hospitals in her native country, Hawa said that she did not get anybody to diagnose her properly.

What is Lithopedion? According to ancient Greeks, a stone baby is a rare condition commonly referred to as lithopedion. It may result from a fetus dying during an abdominal pregnancy or is too large to be absorbed by the body. Lithopedion has affected an approximate number of 300 women globally for the past 400 years of medical literature. Furthermore, only three cases have ever been recorded in Africa; two in South Africa and one in Ghana.
After visiting Mandera county Referral Hospital in September 2020, Hawa underwent a Computerized Tomography (CT) scan that revealed her condition. It is after this that Governor Mandera County, Ali Roba, commended the Mandera Referral gynecologists and confirmed the operation.
At first, Hawa never showed up for the operation as scheduled.On 16 November 2020, Hawa showed up and went through an operation successfully on Tuesday, 17 November 2020.
After the operation, doctors said that Hawa gave birth to a stone baby male infant with a complete placenta and cord weighing 1.75kg. She is now recovering at the surgical unit of Mandera Referral County Hospital.

What are symptoms of stone baby?
Most stone baby women remain asymptomatic all through the period. However, some may experience nausea and vomiting immediately after implantation. Others also may have pelvic pain, abdominal tenderness, and compressive symptoms to the rectum and the urinary bladder.
