Why eliminate the waiver for KCSE Registration fee?
The recently proposed legislation aims to close the Ksh91 billion gap in education funding so that funds can be allocated to other critical academic requirements.
In the event that the measure is enacted, parents will be required to pay the government a portion of the cost of registering for the KCSE exam.
The government justified the idea by claiming that the decision was made because of the rising number of pupils taking the national exams every year.
According to the government, the Ministry of Education has found it difficult to pay for the tests and guarantee that every student can take them because of the high enrollment levels.
Under the current policy, which was introduced by former Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, the government allots Ksh 5 million yearly to cover the registration costs for all KCSE applicants.
According to Matiang’i at the time, some parents found the exam registration cost to be a significant burden, and it kept pupils from underprivileged families from taking the important tests.

More about exam registration fee
The cost-sharing system does not specify how much each parent will have to pay for their children, even though the present KCSE registration fee is Ksh7000.
This comes one month after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba declared that registration for the KCSE exam would open on February 17 to provide candidates enough time to submit their information.
Ogamba announced that registration for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) would open on January 27 while speaking at the announcement of the 2024 KCSE exams.
In order to give applicants who were unable to take the prior exams another chance to do so, the CS also stated that the KCSE mid-year series would be introduced every July for the following three years.
