Prof Hamo was born on July 5, 1980, to his father, the late James Wachira, and his mother (name not known) in Nakuru, Kenya. He is the fifth born in a family of eight. Hamo and his siblings were raised in the military base in Lanet, as their father was an army officer.

Herman Gakobo Kago attended Kenyatta primary and later transferred to Nakuru East Primary School, from which he sat for his KCPE exams. He then joined Nakuru Day for his secondary education.
Later he went to Kisumu Polytechnic, pursuing a Diploma course in electrical engineering. He then dropped out after two years, claiming that he never had an interest in the course.
His comedy career
After dropping out of college, he went to Nakuru theatre and joined the Tamasha band as a vocalist. He as well joined theatre groups for performing high school set books that contributed to his comedy career.
One day after learning that Churchill Show had auditions, he traveled to Nairobi to try his luck. Unfortunately, things never went as planned as judges chased him away from the stage.
Without losing hope, he traveled back to Nakuru and continued attending more auditions. In one of the interviews, Hamo said that he attended six auditions before he got a chance to perform on Churchill on the Road Nakuru Edition. He then found a breakthrough after his show was uploaded on YouTube and went viral.
